To generate a truly multi-hued sonic palette, producers Oddisee and Unknown and reed specialist Kolai were able to draw from a prolific community of musicians in Washington, DC. A city that is too often stereotyped solely as a destination for political ladder climbers, Washington has it's own cultural and artistic intersections that brought Ave.To's collaborators together. It's a city with northern sophistication and southern soul. It has the creative energy of New York but a smaller scale that doesn't smother the spirit. It's a place with a strong local history that also absorbs migrants from every continent. Oddisee filters a Sudanese heritage through the lens of hip-hop and the ethos of go-go. Kolai, the African raised Frenchman, can draw from classical traditions as well as conjure up Eastern textures from his flute. ODDISEE
Since producing and performing the hit track "Musik Lounge" for DJ Jazzy Jeff's The Magnificent LP in 2002, Amir "Oddisee" Mohamed has quickly become a rising star in Hip-Hop and an artist to keep your eye on as both a producer and emcee extraordinaire. Taking advantage of working at A Touch of Jazz studios, Oddisee has incorporated the neo soul vibe of Philly into his eclectic and well decorated resume. Coming from a diverse background, the half Sudanese half African American was blessed with musical talent from both sides of his family. African by Birth. European by Upbringing. Asian Spiritually. American at Heart. Kolai's music is gentle and sweet, some have even said tinted with nostalgia. Melodies are in his head all day long. Some he captures. Others he happily watches fly away... Kolai has been making music for some time now. He's worked with Jazz and Classical musicians, Djs, Producers, NeoSoul or Ska Bands, Vocalists, Lyricists, MCs, etc... "I am happy to work with who ever will have me!" He laughs in his studio, making another cup of green tea. "Music is Infinitely Humbling," he goes on, "Sometimes I feels like you're at the end of your rope and the next day, you're with your friends and some music begins to happen before your very ears and you have to pinch yourself because you're so happy it feels like a Dream!"
