biography

Though Jody Watley certainly helped define an era - to refer to her as simply an artist of the 80's is to miss the point of her stellar and ongoing career entirely. Influential, innovative, timeless and unique. All of these words accurately describe the incomparable, multi-talented and Grammy Award-winning singer - songwriter Jody Watley.

With charted singles and CDs throughout two decades, Vanity Fair Magazine proclaimed “Her knack for reinvention has always complimented her music." Most recently, the #1 Billboard Dance single of her classic 'Looking For a New Love' Remix EP 2005 became the definitive signature anthem (from Jody’s 1987 Grammy Award-winning, eponymous MCA debut) which was released with a sizzling set of 21st Century reconstructions. This release was on the heels of the Billboard Top Twenty Electronic and critically acclaimed gem 'Midnight Lounge.' Exploring the fresh and modern sounds of ambient electronic soul and deep house, URB Magazine wrote: “a soulful surprise”. People Magazine called it “Pick of of the Week”. The U.K.’s Blues and Soul declared,” The Best album of her career”. Recorded with some of the music industry’s top tastemaking producers, King Britt, Masters at Work, Ron Trent, and the U.K based East West Connection; Watley continues to blaze her own creative path. Clearly, Jody Watley has been undergoing a constant musical makeover broadening her eclectic fan base, while remaining fresh and modern.

With a career spanning decades in the music industry, Jody Watley continues to add fresh new colors to her already vibrant, multi-hued canvas. One of the few African-American female singers to successfully break out of the disco diva mold, Jody has matured into a talented singer, songwriter, producer and label mogul on her own terms – staying true to herself and her own unique musical vision - with no regrets. Her unfaltering determination, confidence, inner-peace and fortitude serve as a continual source of inspiration to us all.

Our long love affair with Jody Watley has never ended. To quote fellow Soul Train dancer and former Shalamar background singer Jermaine Stewart (who summed it up best in his 1986 underground smash “Jody,” an undying ode to the eternal diva), “everybody wants some of Jody!”
