biography

Born out of our hugely successful weekly party, Giant Step Records proudly presents 'Giant Step Records Sessions Volume 1'. Mixed by world-renowned resident DJ Ron Trent, the CD features music from Giant Step Records' burgeoning stable of artists including Jody Watley, as well as other like-minded artists, such as Amel Larrieux (Groove Theory), and Blaze.

This is Giant Step's first CD compilation highlighting everyone's favorite sound from the club. It includes tracks previously available on 12" vinyl only and captures the quintessential vibe of New York's dance and soul movement.

Most of the music comes from Giant Step Record's top-notch catalog: the saxy Afrobeat of Nickodemus and Osiris? "Free Souls", the percolating percussion and languid, jazzy guitar of Jeymes Samuel?s "When It Rains", Jiva?s incredible track, "Stars" and the discofied jazz-funk of DJ Deep?s mix of Donnie?s "Holiday" are all pitch-perfect paragons of the Giant Step sound.

Many of the album?s most spine-tingling deep, brilliant moments come courtesy of Trent himself. His work with Richard Worth (the original Giant Step jamming flute man), Atlantis featuring Naomi Nsombi (on the delicately beat-broken "Future Love"), Jody Watley?s "Saturday Night Experience" and his Kalawang "Jingo" (the track which first teamed Trent up with the Giant Step Crew) are all fabulous.

The inclusion of the syncopated drum-and-conga attack of Carl Hancock Rux?s "Lamentations (You, Son)", coupled with Rux?s incredible, heartfelt vocals makes this album essential. Shelter Records also makes an appearance with Blaze?s "Elevation", (one of this seminal duo?s best tracks ever), and Fran?ois K?s Wave Music weighs in with the quite-lovely "Earth is the Place" by Restless Soul sax man Nathan Haines.

This compilation explains better than words ever could, exactly what Giant Step is all about. So stop reading this right now, roll up the carpet, invite some friends over and push "Play". You?re about to experience some sweet soul music, Giant Step style.
