Hypothesis: A three-man production outfit that write amazing, life-changing songs and then perform them live, to devastating effect with a nine-piece band. An outfit that create funked-up Jazz-Latin scores like Santana with Luke Vibert Controlling Front of House!
Here’s the deal, at its creative core, RSL is Chas Morrison, Martin Almond and Jo Botham. Three 20 something’s, originating from Summerseat, 8 miles North of the Manchester Metropolis in the United Kingdom. Strange then that the songs they produce should put them somewhere closer to the equator? Through intense rehearsing, hours spent in the studio and growing up on each other’s doorsteps, they know each other pretty well. This strong link between the three is the basis from which RSL’s songs flow and develop.
Their last release "Wesley Music" (now geared for a US release on Giant Step) received praise from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Masters at Work, Danny Krivit and Mr Scruff. Certainly a fan club envied by most and an example of their wide appeal. With Nu Yorican/Latin-edged musicianship and a passion for authentic sounds it’s easy to understand their broad fan-base on both sides of the Atlantic.
The live performances are already taking on legendary. Because of the nature of the group ("At the core we’re instrumentalists") RSL bring with them a number of guest musicians, playing Trumpet, Rhodes, Bass, Percussion and anything else they can grab. And of course Vocalists. "Collaboration is the way forward; we bring in these special people to put the icing on". The forthcoming single "The Mast" stands as a testament to this, featuring the vocal talents of Julie Gordon, alongside the brass arrangements of Howard Jacobs (Homelife).
Their blend of Jazz tinged breaks has been showcased at festivals and club nights around the UK as well as France and Switzerland. With each release the demand for more dates grows ever higher.
"If were not gigging and rehearsing we’re writing", an RSL LP is imminent….
The Album will include diverse Latin, Hip-hop and funk grooves but essentially it will sound like RSL.
Conclusion: Time for RSL. A band with a method not reliant on any one culture but absorb them all to push forward new, live dance music….songs with substance and longevity.
