biography

Nickodemus was born in the Bronx and raised in Queens and Long Island. He started DJ'ing at a very young age when his brother gave him his first Gemini turntables. Soon after came his first DJ gigs where he was playing hip-hop and reggae with a mix of his Dad's old soul and funk records. Earth Wind and Fire, Ralph McDonald, Santana and Creative Source were among those passed down grooves.

In '93 he moved to the Lower East Side and hooked up with Giant Step by passing off a mix tape to a guy named Marc Labelle. Brought into the Giant Step fold shortly after, this regular gig gave him the chance to test and explore new and old music with an amazing group of musicians and party people. Shortly after, he linked up with Organic Grooves in the basement of Bar XVI. In 1996, the Sunshine posse in Vienna gave him his first international exposure. They had a very similar formula to the Giant Step parties. Again, he found himself jamming with musicians, creating a thick, dubby, percussive sound - something he's continued throughout his career.

In the fall of 1998, with partner Mariano, Nickodemus started what was a continuation of his three year Frying Pan parties on the Hudson River. The hidden deck party became known as "Turntables on the Hudson" - a forum for family and friends to dance to and explore all types of dance music. Over the past 7 years, some of the world's top DJ's and bands have appeared at the party including David Holmes, Antibalas, Groove Collective, Brazilian Girls, Quantic, Peter Kruder, Rich Medina and many others.

Simultaneous to all of the dj'ing Nickodemus was dabbling with a sampler and an 8 track, creating songs like "Spoon Song," and "Cleopatra in New York" with Carol C and "The Spirits Within" with Apani B. Alongside his first production partner, Jay B (aka Pleaser/ Truth Mechanic), they made the heaviest Indian, hip-hop, funk fusion songs called "Tribute to Baba" and "Samsara." They also did thier first remix together of Henri Mancini's "Shot in the Dark by Gunn." Soon after, Nickodemus hooked up with longtime friend Chris Annibell (aka Osiris). Together, they produced a number of World, Funk, Fusion dancefloor originals and remixes. Some of those highlights include "Free Souls," "Mariposa," "Why Can't We Live Together," and remixes for Astor Piazzola, Sultan Kahn, The Latin Project, Dublex and more.

Nickodemus also spent time touring with the late great percussionist/ songwriter Mino CInelu - one of Miles Davis' favorite musicians. From 1999 to 2001, Nickodemus played MPC and turntables with Mino's band, touring France, Canada and Senegal. Following a multitude of experiences, Nickodemus buckled down to create his own unique vision. A full length album incorporating the many sounds and experiences of his hometown and crew in New York. This fall, Nickodemus will be touring nationally and internationally both as DJ and debuting his full live "Endangered Species" band in NYC on September 16th.
