DJ Moni began collecting vinyl at the age of nine - after begging her parents for a turntable after moving from the US to Colombia. The Caribbean and African rhythms she grew up with were met with the bass-heavy electro, hip hop and new wave sounds of the early eighties. Her deep love of music and dance encouraged her to DJ and co-host a radio show in Washington DC?s WVAU as a college freshman. After graduating, she worked for independent record labels, as she explored early house, jungle and trip hop.
In 1997, she moved to New York and began booking and promoting club nights featuring Djs, live music and visual artists, eventually inspiring her to return to the decks professionally the following year. Moni has since spun alongside Bob Sinclar, Spinna, N?Dea Davenport, JC (Amalgamation of Soundz), Russ Jones, Smash, Qool DJ Marv, Carol C, Nickodemus and Maurice Fulton. She has held residencies throughout NYC, and her clients have included Central Park Summerstage, Issey Miyake, The Smithsonian?s Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, Dwell Magazine, Joe?s Pub, Sephora and TV Azteca.
In 2003, Moni joined the female DJ crew Ubiquita, along with Reborn and Selly. The following year, Reborn asked her to tour nationally with the critically acclaimed hip hop theater show, Flow, providing a live on-stage score - scratching, cutting and mixing on cue ? to great reviews in the LA Times and Washington Post. In DC, ?Flow? was nominated for Outstanding Non-Resident Production in the 2005 Helen Hayes Theater Awards. Moni has recently worked as musical director/dj for the hip hop theater productions "Welcome to Arroyo's," "ManChild," and recently for a benefit production raising $260K for Youth Communications. Moni has been a resident artist in the NY public school system teaching students the fundamentals of Djing and currently teaches after-school arts programs to elementary and junior high students.
Moni has also begun producing music, creating the original score for the ?We Got Issues? national tour and is working on her upcoming EP. She continues to spin her mix of Latin and pan-African rhythms, broken beat, hip hop, funk and house with Ubiquita NYC and for corporate and private events.
