One Self is a collaboration of like minds. Born within the culturally rich and ethnically diverse music scene of London and now living in Brooklyn NYC, One Self is the collaboration of DJ Vadim, Yarah Bravo and Blu Rum 13, engaging each other to create a world of possibilities and mixing together a global melting pot of musical ideas.
Vadim's prominent releases on Ninja Tune gave him a platform to develop a touring unit of scratch DJ's, rappers, musicians and beat boxers. This fluid group was known as the Russian Percussion and over a three year period, a total of more than 600 shows were rocked worldwide. For Vadim, One Self was a natural progression as the 'Children of Possibility' Album took shape and the unit formed.
The One Self band was premiered at London's famous Jazz Cafe to sell-out crowds, and has gone on to sell out venues including Cargo (London), The Red Club (St Petersburg) and has played at festivals to crowds of up to 14,000, most notably at Hip Hop Kemp (Czech Republic), The Big Chill (UK) and Sonar Festival (Spain).
Vadim's progressive production and adept song crafting is complimented by the vocal gymnastics of your friendly neighbourhood MC, Blurum13, and the sultry spoken word of the Mistress of Poetic Invention, Miss Yarah Bravo. Their debut album, 'Children of Possibility,' received worldwide acclaim and was just a glimpse of what was to come from this group. Sharing their passion for life, music and performance with their audience; One Self aim to leave you with a newly discovered skip in your step, a smile on your face, and an elevation of your soul.
With a career marked by critical acclaim and a hardcore following, DJ Vadim could have continued to work as a producer with whoever he liked: the cream of MC talent from around the globe. As one of the few producers to straddle the divide between independent hip hop and more leftfield instrumental music, he could have stayed in the comfort zone. But this time out he decided to gather his closest musical collaborators together with him to create a true group ethic and radically freshen up his approach in the process. The results are sensational, a revelation.
Both Swedish-Brazilian Yarah Bravo and American Blu Rum 13 have been long term Vadim associates, but in addition have rhymed with everyone from TTC to Canibus to Luke Vibert to Kid Koala. Their voices, placed together for the first time, mesh into a lyrical, melodic blend which summons up memories of the best of Native Tongues updated for a new century - Blu Rum’s gruff, musical growl the ideal foil for Yarah’s sweet, octave-hopping, spoken word stylings. Two intelligent MCs with sacks full of ideas but the subtlety not to ram it down your throat.
The effect of working with two so well-matched vocalists (along with a new obsession with dub and the bass-heavy music of the Caribbean) seems to have revivified Vadim’s approach, a real sense of sunshine permeating a record which still punches its weight in terms of stylistic innovation and experimentation.
So there you have it. A true unit (One Self) working together to open up new possibilities for themselves and for the music they love.
