e.s.t. (the Esbjörn Svensson Trio) is the threesome of Esbjörn Svensson (piano), Dan Berglund (double bass) and Magnus Oström (drums). The trio exploded onto the scene with From Gagarin's Point Of View, before coming to Earth with Strange Place For Snow and Seven Days Of Falling. Esbjörn Svensson provided food for the soul with Viaticum, lost himself in his Tuesday Wonderland, and the journey now comes to an unfortunate end with Leucocyte, the last album after Svensson's accidental death while scuba diving near Stockholm. The Swedish jazz pianist and composer was only 44. e.s.t.'s incredible musical journey began barely ten years ago, but they garnered several prestigious awards, graced the cover of several international magazines including Jazziz and Downbeat and mesmerized critics and fans along the way. To say Esbjörn Svensson will be missed is a massive understatement, but his legend lives on with the wonderful expressive music of e.s.t.
Formed in 1990 the trio has been mesmerizing fans and critics alike ever since. They have won several prestigious awards including 6 Swedish Grammys®; 4 of which were in the Best Jazz Album category including their newest, Tuesday Wonderland. The other 2 were awarded to Svensson for Best Jazz Musician in 1996 and Best Jazz Composer in 1998. 2002’s Strange Place For Snow also earned the band numerous international awards awards including the French award of Victoire du Jazz (comparable to the Grammy in the U.S.) in the Best International Artist category. The trio was also awarded the esteemed European Jazz Award in 2004 which is voted on by 23 jazz industry professionals from 23 countries. e.s.t. was also just bestowed the honor of receiving the prominent Golden Record for Best Jazz Album of 2006 given by the Swedish Jazz Association for Tuesday Wonderland.
The media has been equally enthralled with the trio as proof of their constant presence on MTV in Scandinavia and having graced the cover of several international magazines including Jazziz in November 2005 and the aforementioned Downbeat in May 2006. The New York Times was quoted as saying they are “one of the most talked about groups currently on the European circuit” and the UK’s Jazzwise went a step further noting; “it was Sweden, then Europe, and now it’s the world… original, absorbing, dynamic.”
