Afro Funké Hosts DJ Glenn Red, DJ Jeremy Sole + Subatomic Sound Live (NYC) + Roy Hargrove Listening Party
Thursday, November 20 2008
Zanzibar, Santa Monica CA

event description
The Roy Hargrove Quintet's recently made its maiden voyage on Groovin' High / Emarcy Records with the sublime album, Earfood. Discovered by Wynton Marsalis, trumpeter/bandleader Hargrove recorded his first solo album in 1990, Diamond in the Rough, on Novus/RCA. He recorded four more with the label before signing with Verve, where he released several top-tier albums, including With the Tenors of Our Time and the Grammy Award-winning Habana with his Afro-Cuban band Crisol. In addition to critically acclaimed classic jazz albums, Hargrove also experimented with a contemporary jazz band, The RH Factor, which applies elements of hip-hop, funk, soul and gospel music into the rarefied jazz mix.

The weekly club Afro Funké is the brainchild of African Afro Roots Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA's need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it's far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who's based in LA and his native Ghana, together with producer and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funké, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy Sole's Musaics. Each week Afro Funké presents guest DJs, live performances, dancers, record release parties, fundraisers, art installations, crafts and more while Sole spins his unique Musaics, or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation.
