Afro Funké and KCRW Present Nickodemus' Sun People Release Party + Playing For Change Pier After Party
Thursday, July 2 2009
Zanzibar, Santa Monica CA

event description
After the strong debut album Endangered Species, Nickodemus unleashes his second solo album, Sun People. Inspired by sunny days and good people, the album mixes positive dance music from all over the globe including Guinea, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Romania, India, Turkey, United Kingdon & his hometown Brooklyn, NYC! Some of the original Endangered Species cast returns for Sun People including Jay Rodriguez, Quantic, Hector "Tempo" Alomar & the Candela Allstars, Zeb, Nappy G & Real Live Show. New additions to the signature Nickodemus sound on Sun People include Guinean born singer Ismael Kouyate, Indian classical & pop singer Falu, Richard Shepherd of Radio Mundial, Brazilian born singer Liliana of the band Maracatu, the versatile voice of Nuriya, members of Taraf de Haidouks, and The New York Gypsy Allstars.

Real Live Show features on the uplifting hip-hop jam "Sun Children" while Quantic lends his unmistakable groove on the salsa ritmo of "La Lluvia." Not to be outdone, Liliana Araujo features on the hot samba of "Gira Do Sol" while Mandingo vocalist Ismael Kouyate lends his Afro-beat groove to "N'Dini." Packed with brilliant collaborations, Sun People is a pan-continental party not to be missed!

The weekly club Afro Funké is the brainchild of African Afro Roots Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA's need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it's far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who's based in LA and his native Ghana, together with producer and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funké, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy Sole's Musaics. Each week Afro Funké presents guest DJs, live performances, dancers, record release parties, fundraisers, art installations, crafts and more while Sole spins his unique Musaics, or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation.
