event description
Come feel the love at Littlefield on Valentine’s Day with the sounds of internationally acclaimed Somi.
On tour for her third album, If The Rains Come First, which is currently #2 on Billboard’s World Music chart, Somi couldn’t have picked a better time or place to share the bold elegance of her voice with Brooklyn. No matter if you list yourself as “single,” “in a relationship” or “it’s complicated” on your Facebook page, the seductive sounds of Somi coupled with the beautiful new venue, Littlefield, will definitely have you feeling loved.
Somi’s unique soul-jazz style has been called upon for collaborations and live performances with some of the world’s leading artists including John Legend, Cassandra Wilson, Mos Def and Paul Simon. On Sunday, February 14, she performs live at Littlefield with New York’s own DJ Moni. Divine Chocolate will be on hand serving complimentary sweets through out the night –- so everyone’s guaranteed to get something this Valentine’s Day!
Somi
A true multicultural woman, Somi was born in Illinois to immigrants from Rwanda and Uganda, then spent her early childhood in Zambia. The African cultural legacy is as vital as ever in her current music, which Somi likes to call New African Soul. But so too is the music she heard upon relocating to New York, with American jazz singers like Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan as essential to her artistic development as the legendary African female voices of Miriam Makeba, Cesaria Evora and Sade. Her third album If The Rains Come First (out now on ObliqSound) is a stunning collection of self-penned story-based songs, a meditation on opening ourselves up to life’s blessings and challenges much in the way that we accept the rain and all that it brings.
