Afro Funké Live Presents Nuriya + Easy Star All-Stars' Dubber Side of the Moon Listening Party
Thursday, October 21 2010
Zanzibar, Santa Monica CA
|
event description
It's not just the curious force of Nuriya's presence. It's not just that the intensity of her voice and singing is matched equally by the presence of her raw, sultry dance. Nor is it the whirling flavors of the Latin, Oriental and Gypsy traditions that find the audience screaming and the critics applauding. No - more than anything else, it's the far-reaching allure of her soul that leaves journalists from the Sud Ouest Journal proclaiming Nuriya's performances "bewitch the public!" And anyone who's experienced Nuriya live, on stage, will be hard-pressed to deny that claim.
Nuriya has attracted a diverse range of collaborators including DJ Nickodemus, the Pharcyde, Maurice el Medioni, Henri "Scars" Struck, Raices Habaneras, Habana Tres, Jason Lindner, and Babylon Circus + Babylon Circus Experience: 3W, with whom she toured Europe. Nuriya is currently between New York, Los Angeles and London working on her upcoming album.
Plus Listening Party with giveaways from 9 - 10 PM:
Easy Star All-Stars' Dubber Side of the Moon
Inspired by the burgeoning dub step scene and dub visionaries such as On-U Sound's Adrian Sherwood and Mad Professor, the Easy Star All-Stars have compiled Dubber Side of the Moon (out October 26), the ultimate remix collection of their much lauded reggae smash Dub Side of The Moon. Each track features a unique dub producer exploring spaced-out reggae and bass-heavy remixes of the original Dub Side of the Moon, a reggae tribute to Pink Floyd’s iconic Dark Side of the Moon.
The weekly club Afro Funké is the brainchild of African Afro Roots Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA's need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it's far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who's based in LA and his native Ghana, together with producer and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funké, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy Sole's Musaics. Each week Afro Funké presents guest DJs, live performances, dancers, record release parties, fundraisers, art installations, crafts and more while Sole spins his unique Musaics, or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation.
