Afro Funké Presents DJ Al Jackson + Les Nubians' Nü Revolution Listening Party
Thursday, April 21 2011
Zanzibar, Santa Monica CA
|
event description
DJ Al Jackson (The Soul Children)
Son of a jazz musician, DJ Al Jackson of The Soul Children, is dedicated to bridging the gap between hip hop and jazz. His musical influences range from Allen Jackson(dad) and John Coltrane to Pete Rock. Currently, he has his own music production company called “Sincerebeats.” Through his company Sincerebeats, Al has released 2 DJ-mix CDs entitled L’automne and 2nd Quarter with more releases to follow.
Les Nubians - Nü Revolution
Les Nubians has its genesis in a small town in the South West region of France where the Paris-born sisters Hélčne and Célia Faussart lived as teenagers after returning from several years' residence with their parents in the African country of Chad. Their upcoming album Nü Revolution may be the most impressive representation of Les Nubians' "Afropean Soul" to date. Featuring special guests ranging from African music legend Manu Dibango to indie soul icon Eric Roberson, with South African pop stars Freshly Ground, Ghanian-American MC Blitz The Ambassador and Polish MC John Banzaď along for the ride. Somehow, Les Nubians manage to make the blend of so many diverse elements seem logical and organic; it flows quite naturally from their multicultural lives.
The weekly club Afro Funké is the brainchild of African Afro Roots Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA's need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it's far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who's based in LA and his native Ghana, together with producer and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funké, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy Sole's Musaics. Each week Afro Funké presents guest DJs, live performances, dancers, record release parties, fundraisers, art installations, crafts and more while Sole spins his unique Musaics, or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation.
