event description
Following the last packed Church edition featuring DJ Rich Medina, World-renowned DJ, Producer, Remixer, Composer, Musician, and Tru Thoughts recording artist Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) returns alongside resident vocalist Nia andrews (Janelle Monae/Common), Nate Smith (José James/Dave Holland) on drums and David "DJ" Ginyard (Estelle/Screaming Headless Torsos). This edition of CHURCH features a special appearance by Ian Friday, the NYC-based “Global Soul” DJ who has been a mainstay of the soul and house music scenes internationally since the early 1990’s, helping to break the careers of Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, among many others, and also creating the residency Libation which has become the stuff of house music legend for NYC over the past 5+ years.
Mark de Clive-Lowe continues to build on the success of his new CHURCH monthly series in New York at DROM. CHURCH is a whirlwind mix of live jazz, sampling and a DJ set. Fast becoming the discerning music-lovers’ and musicians’ event of choice, don’t be surprised if you spot the likes of Masters at Work’s Louie Vega or soul legend Leon Ware in the audience; Chris “Daddy” Dave, MC John Robinson or Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on the stage and the likes of Ge-ology on the decks. The first live set showcases the jazz side of MdCL, blending standards, groove explorations and classic trio interplay with resampling, electronics and live remixing. As the first set draws to a close, the guest DJ takes over the soundtrack while the tables and chairs are cleared away ready for MdCL to flip the script with the second set—a unique blend of live electronica and live remixing—the jazz club colliding head to head with the dance floor.
