Billie Holiday: Remixed & Reimagined Record Release Party
Friday, July 27 2007
Mosaic Lounge, Baltimore MD

event description
Following the success of Nina Simone: Remixed & Reimagined, Legacy Recordings continues to expand the jazz paradigm with Billie Holiday: Remixed & Reimagined, the second installment of a new series that taps contemporary dance and electronic music's most sought-after producers/remixers to reinterpret classic recordings for a new generation. Roland Richards and Ladybug Mecca energize "Spreadin' Rhythm Around," which recasts the original as a surging "hip-hop meets swing" anthem. "Trav'lin' All Alone" becomes a sinister urban affair at the hands of veteran hip hop/funk/modern soul mixmasters Nickodemus and Zeb. Master DJ/turntablist and sonic manipulator DJ Logic cunningly modernizes "Glad To Be Unhappy" into a cinematic mosaic. More than just a simple remix package, the 14-track set underscores the importance of the original recordings while retooling them for an audience more inclined to a modern club environment.

This night is part of the Fort Knox Five club night dubbed Fort Knox Fridays. Special guest DJs Fort Knox Five and Adam Macadam. The Fort Knox Five have had a huge impact on the international funk and breaks scene over the past couple of years. FK5's unique DJ style ranges from eclectic downbeat & hip hop, to upbeat funk and breaks. Having been selected into the prestigious Urb Magazine Next 100. A major turning point in 2005 was when they were selected to be Gwen Stefanis tour and show dj on the Harajuku Lovers 2005 tour. They released a mix cd of their remixes entitled Fort Knox Reminted in March of 2007. Keep an eye out for their first full length album out early fall 2007.

Adam Macadam (Adam Kurzawa) began working for New York’s famed Giant Step in the summer of 1999. Coming loaded with energy after spinning for four years at Shippensburg University’s WSYC-FM, Adam was anxious to cut his teeth on the decks upon returning to his native Brooklyn, NY. After playing a few one off gigs here and there for E. Moss of Atmos, namely at Furious Styles at Drinkland and A Night Called Quest at Tribe, and two stints at the famed Hammerstein Ballroom for the Flash Forward Festival, he started doing a monthly party with fellow Giant Stepper Andrew Nelson, aka Mr. Chips, called s_t_a_p_l_e at the, then brand new, Aqua Lounge in Philadelphia with pal Cozmic Cat. Wanting to do something on a more frequent basis and a little closer to home, the two started the Monday weekly Adhesive at Brooklyn café / record store Halcyon. Adhesive became their artistic sanctuary where they showed some of their favorite films, played an unapologetically eclectic range of music and brought down some of their favorite friends to play with them, including DJ Spinna, Qool DJ Marv, Loop Professor, Saskai and Jonesy, among others. Fast forward to 2007 and Adam, now residing in Baltimore, has been spending time opening for Fort Knox Five at their Mosaic Lounge residency and recently played a reunion set with Mr. Chips at the Artscape Festival.
