Afro Funké Hosts DJ Al Jackson (Soul Children / Ju Ju) and Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale's Breathing Under Water Listening Party
Thursday, November 1 2007
Zanzibar, Santa Monica CA

event description
DJ Al Jackson, son of a jazz musician, is dedicated to bridging the gap between hip hop and jazz. His musical influences range from Allen Jackson (dad) and John Coltrane to Pete Rock. Al's DJ career was launched in 1989 fueled by his passion for collecting records and the desire to start an underground dance club. Simply stated, he began deejaying because he got tired of waiting in long lines and spending lots of money for clubs that were not worth the price of admission.

In the year 2000, he was nominated for a LA Weekly Music Award as the "Best Selector DJ" and he was nominated for a NAACP Theater award in the "Best Musical Score" category for the play "2G'S." He won the 2002 NAACP Theater Award for "Best Musical Score" in the play "Weights." Currently, he has his own music production company called "Sincerebeats." Through his company Sincerebeats, Al has released 2 DJ-mix CDs entitled L'automne and 2nd Quarter with more releases to follow.

Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale expand beyond cultural and traditional borders of music with their new collaboration. With the help of featured guests Ravi Shankar, Sting, Norah Jones, Midival Punditz, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and others, the duo has succeeded in blending Indian classical, electronica, dance, and folk into a genre-hopping triumph. Imagine living in a world where psychedelic raves follow classical recitals and rock and roll dives become Bollywood hangouts. A world where one finds West Coast yogis immersed in Eastern culture and the New York underground drawing inspiration from the New Delhi club scene, where globalization is an internal state-of-being and borders were made to be crossed. This is the world Anoushka Shankar and Karsh Kale live in and journey through. Breathing Under Water is the soundtrack of this journey as created by two of the most visionary talents pioneering the hip and fertile overlap of today's world music scene.

The weekly club Afro Funké is the brainchild of African Afro Roots Reggae star, Rocky Dawuni, who realized LA's need for a night dedicated to African music, culture and art and it's far reaching legacy around the world. Dawuni, who's based in LA and his native Ghana, together with producer and photographer Cary Sullivan created Afro Funké, bringing on board resident DJ and partner Jeremy Sole's Musaics. Each week Afro Funké presents guest DJs, live performances, dancers, record release parties, fundraisers, art installations, crafts and more while Sole spins his unique Musaics, or sound collage-blends of hip hop, jazz/funk, dub reggae, afro beat, and remixed world beats; pieced together with tribal breaks, and uplifted by dubbed-out turntable manipulation and live instrumentation.
