The Chris Clark from 2001’s wintery ‘Clarence Park’ is now quite simply Clark. Other than the shortening of his name, Clark’s sound is still a genre-defying battlefield where aural opposites manage to sign peace treaties in leftfield albums that are willing to take risks.
With Body Riddle (Warp), Clark cloaks live instrumentation with electronic composition to create an album that’s as focused as it is abstract. Organic, vernal synths flirt with cold pops and clicks (“Roulette Thrift Run”); psychadelia seduces bizarre, broken disco (“Herzog”) plays with the throbbing ticks of a clock; dizzying electro melodies melt into skittish, chunky prog-rock clouds (“Matthew Unburdened”). At once tense as it completely unbridled, the album goes well beyond the esoteric limitations of post-rock while rounding off the harsher corners of straight dance music. In all, ‘Body Riddle’ is a masterpiece for all seasons, not to mention almost every sort of music lover out there.
