The Rapture Pieces of the People We Love - Universal
description

And the prophets sayeth: Find your eternal reward within the Rapture's sly dance-punk incantations or get left behind. Flouting the doubters who gave their white-guy-getting-down sound the shelf-life of an organic banana, the NYC quartet returns with a sophomore album that's both timely and timeless. Swirling in a warm blast of disco, dub, post-punk, post-rock, the Cure, Gang of Four, early-80s coke funk, and mid-millennial electronica, ‘Pieces of the People We Love’ is the music that savvy teens would've rocked had it existed 20 years ago which is being rocked now by those of us who were savvy teens 20 years ago.

What that means is that unlike ‘Echoes,’ which felt both spawned and trapped by the electroclash/dance punk crucible of 2003, ‘Pieces of the People We Love’ looks deeper into the influences behind its influences, becoming more lush and accessible without losing its edge. "Get Myself Into It" is the prime example, a gloriously upbeat floor-filler that rides along a slinky saxophone lick and never derails into the faux-funk schlock the instrument often imparts. Whether it's swishy disco ("The Devil"), raucous rock ("Down for So Long"), or psychedelic soul (album closer "Live in Sunshine"), ‘Pieces of the People We Love’ is a perfectly paced and sequenced party soundtrack. These whip-smart dudes are no one-time fad band. Better start loving your fellow man, because the Rapture is upon us.
