Moby's new ‘best of’ CD Go: The Very Best Of Moby is titled after the single from Story So Far that gave Moby his first major success. It features key songs from his career as well as a new track and a collection of remixes.
The first track "Natural Blues" (Play) sets the tone for the album, opening up with an a capella of Moby’s vocals. Listeners new to Moby will be exposed to one of his classic trademarks as he interlaces bits of a folk tune into an electronic background. The next track is a remix of the title track "Go" and gives depth to the original by adding elements like octave additions in the piano part.
The notable new track is "New York, New York" featuring Debbie Harry. Composed this past summer in Manhattan, this song is a catchy straightforward dance track with an 80's vibe appropriately sung by Blondie's former front woman. Also included is the song "South Side" from the original 1999 recording of the album Play with Moby singing vocals. Although this is the original, it’s interesting to hear this song sans Gwen Stefani. And to prove his mettle in a live setting, he has included the track "Feeling So Real" recorded live in London, which takes the energy on the album to a new level. He bookends the first CD with the ambient, minimalist "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters,” tying up the mood and highlighting some of Moby's most notable TV and film exposure, having been widely used in TV commercials and in the movie Syrianna.
Diehard Moby fans will love the second CD of remixes included with the compilation. Ferry Corsten's remix of "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" and Timo Maas’s vocal remix of "We are All Made of Stars" are particularly good at capturing the essence of the original and interpreting it in a creative way.
The compilation contains one of Moby’s characteristic CD booklet essays in which he talks about political and humanitarian issues. Ironically he begins, "I certainly never expected to ever in a million years release a 'best of' CD." But in this "best of" both hardcore fans and newcomers to Moby's music will be able to see his prolific work. Song after song on this album shows not only Moby's incredible uniqueness but the considerable impact he has had on society.
