Lily Allen Concert Review
description

Rounding out her MTV sponsored promotional tour, Lily Allen stopped in the City of Brotherly Love on Monday, February 12th. The concert, like many of hers was completely sold out.

With doors open at 7pm, fans were lined up and down the street for a prime spot in the front. Once inside, DJ Aaron Lacrate started to get the crowd warmed up, playing a mix of soul, hip-hop, reggae and pop/rock. As he wound down his 45 minute set, the place was packed and people were getting restless waiting for Allen.

About 9pm, the band strolled on stage and started to play the opening chords to “LDN.” The deafening scream began, and it got even louder when petite Allen strolled out, grabbed the mic and began doing her thing. She skipped around to various tracks from her debut album, ‘Alright, Still,’ like “Nan You’re A Window Shopper,” “Friday Night,” and a song about her experience with men with small packages, “Not Big.” In between the singing, Allen mentioned digesting a Philly cheesesteak a few hours earlier to which everyone cheered and laughed.

The band she brought with her is definitely worth mentioning. Not only did they cover the basics – bass, drums, keyboard and guitar (which were all tight), her crew also came with a horn section. The chemistry of the band gave songs like “Shame On You” and ballad, “Littlest Thing” an extra clean sound. Allen gets many props for the band element. I mean, she could have just had a CD or even a DJ with her. But, nah…she came correct.

And who knew how funny Lily Allen was? She made jokes throughout the night like when she sipped a drink and claimed it was to help her sore throat. And setting up the scene for “Everything’s Wonderful” by claiming she wrote the song for the people who try to stick it to you like bank managers, CEO’s, prime ministers - and she whispered - *presidents*. She then put her head down and giggled saying she won’t go there because this is her first tour and she ain’t no Dixie Chick!

Allen did two encores. The first was obviously, “Smile,” to which the crowd sang back word for word. Her second encore included “Alfie” and also a cover of the Specials’ “Black Expression.”

By the time it was over, Allen had a cigarette in hand and a giddy smile on her face. It seemed that she was overwhelmed and humbly taken back by all the support she has received in America. Judging from the deafening cheer that greeted her when she vowed to return before the year is over, there is no doubt that it will be another sold out tour.
