description

The new release by Salif Keita, ‘M’Bemba’ showcases the beautiful melodies and rhythms that the master of Malian music has been churning out for over three and half decades. With an uncanny passion and emotional delivery his music is heart warming and unforgettable. Keita proves without question that music is indeed the universal language. His influences on music around the globe are undeniable, as his history of credits read like a virtual who’s who of rock, jazz, latin, reggae and world music.

“Ladji”, with a guest appearance by Buju Banton, has a great groove that builds then soars with dense rhythms. “Yambo” is another standout track that has a fascinating interplay between the guitars, percussion and Keita’s ability to do just about anything with his magnificent voice. The title track “M’Bemba” is captivating, with the delicate melody brought together by the joyously powerful vocals accompanied by the strong chorus performed by Keita’s sisters.

While I was not completely unfamiliar with Salif Keita prior to listening to this new release, I was not prepared to become totally enthralled with the diversity of the music. Strong from start to finish, it has something for every mood - from when I want to get up and move or sit back and relax. It is such a multi facetted combination that shines with grace, enthusiasm, sincerity and majesty. This is an absolutely gorgeous CD.
