Malena Pérez’s 'STARS' is like honey. The experience is enveloping with a uniquely distinctive flavor and texture that lingers long after, reminding you of the sensory tryst and encouraging you to come back for more.
Released under her independently-owned Cubanita Groove Records label, Pérez masterfully assembles an opening track that speaks to the many reasons why her first international album is heralded as one of the most anticipated of the summer. Malena Pérez assumes the role of conjure woman on “Oriente” that is both haunting and spiritual. Employing the subtle nuances of Fela Kuti, Ceclia Cruz, Nina Simone and Etheridge Knight, the singer/songwriter exudes a musical playfulness fashioned between her voice and the instruments, simultaneously working with and against each other to prepare you for the melodic whirlwind yet to materialize.
Coming out the box as an easily identifiable single for those familiar with the original 2004 release, “Free To Fly” appears again coupling pulsating beats and infectious drum rhythms with inspirational vocals continuing to ensure heavy rotation in the musical arsenal of any baby powder toting house head worth their salt. “Chase The Butterflies” is a much softer follow-up, but in no way is it less compelling. In fact the track adds depth to the release, documenting yet another shift in style that comes across as eclectic rather than chaotic.
Introducing the sensual ballad “Surrender,” Pérez weaves a story of yearning and declaration that slip out of love letter into lullaby and back again. In another seamless transition “Tomorrow” emerges as a multi-layered romantic groove that appeals to the feet, head and heart.
“Praise The Day” and “Confesión” emerge as obvious highlights. Collaborating with Osunlade on “Praise The Day,” Malena Pérez’s voice soars beautifully over the “talking” drums, while the flute solo in “Confesión” is reminiscent of Frankie Knuckles’ 1991 release “The Whistle Song.”
A little more than two years in the making; 'STARS' is definitely a labor of love. The release exudes passion, talent, and originality. “Enjoy. Goses. Enjoy”
