Brookville's second release, 'Life In The Shade,' emerges as a musical dreamscape capable of ushering you through the range of emotions without missing an intoxicating beat.
As one third of the indie pop group Ivy, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist Andy Chase constructs yet another solo venture that fuses dense lyrics and melodies with fluid musical arrangements all too familiar to followers of The Go Betweens and select cuts from Outside and Santessa. Although the frontman, many of Chase’s past collaborators make appearances on this latest venture. A firm believer in the "if it aint broke don't fix it model," the Andy Chase/James Iha partnership is in full effect yielding hypnotic compositions that at times require an outside element to break the monotony. Luckily "Nothing's Meant To Last" surfaces as a refreshing transition. Quietly disturbing the ambient mood, "Nothing's Meant To Last" is a refreshing track that breathes life into Brookville's cerebral musings courtesy of Sabina Sciubba's vocal stylings suggesting a reference to the Getz/Gilberto collaborations.
"Afraid to Fall" takes you on a winding road--often rising, falling, pausing and opening--towards the idea of surrendering to love. The music beautifully personifies the lyrics Chase constructs. "Break Yourself" is the proverbial assault that declares "Life In The Shade" is a much needed addition to your musical collection. The infectious electric and acoustic guitar riffs coupled with rhodes further affirm it's standout potential.
"Golden" is an up tempo track that provides the much needed ear candy for summer traveling and rooftop parties. The album's title track is a sooth ballad whose use of the toy piano and flugelhorn generate such a unique sound that evokes more than one listen.
'Life In The Shade' is the cool breeze on a summer day--unexpected, but welcomed.
