I don't know about best...most Giant Step events are slammin'! Ff course the shine parties were hot! Ron Trent werkin' it out with all those dope guests like Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova...etc. My first giantstep event was actually in Boston where I am from. There were a series of Giant Step sponsored events put on by John Reagan and his crew. Amazing parties featuring Mighty-Mi (high and mighty) and DJ Kon, with Live jazz and artists doing their ish live. those were some dope parties. AND my introduction to the World of Giant Step. Oh yeah, that was back in 1992!

My "first" Giant Step memory was getting home from Dance Tracks with a fresh 7" copy of Donnie's "Do You Know" in the summer of 2001 after reading a review of the single in a hipster mag. Man, I'll remember that day forever. My roomate was mad as **** with me (it was on repeat for hours)! Since then, I've been unplugged from the matrix. But I believe my "best" memories are yet to come!

Yeah Gilles at Cielo was a classic-I wasn't at Jazzanova's Baktun show, but heard great things. I am going to Jazzanova event for sure on July 1st. While we are on the great memory tip here's another one............. Giant Step's 5th Anniversary show in Bryant Park 1995. Ohio Players toped the bill...it was a steaming hot day and Ohio Players were on "Fire" they did all their classics; Angel, Heaven (It Must Be Like This), Sweet Sticky Thing, Love Rollercoaster....

i remember my first GS event: March 2000 when Gilles packed what used to be Shine and there were blox of lines in front of the venue. he played a rocking set with everything from the latest Truby Trio 12 to classic Young Disciples material.
and what about the NY debut of bebel gilberto? the response was soo strong a second show was added the same night! ms. gilberto most definitely delivered the goods that night - a star was born!
groovy

I have been attending Giant Step events from day one (that's Summer of 1990), and have many many great memories. I wanted to hear about other peoples experiences over the years too.
Here are a couple of mine to get the party started.
Guru's Jazzamatazz live performance in the basement of Metropolis Cafe (circa 1992). This was the first time Guru performed Jazzamatazz album to a packed club special guests included: Roy Ayers, Nina Cherry, Donald Byrd to name a few. I also seem to remember cameras filming the event (would love to get hold of that footage).
Nuyorican Soul album release party at Supper Club Spring 1997-this was an unforgettable night. Firstly because everyone and I mean everyone had to get dressed to the nines. There was free champagne all night and to DJ's were Francois K and Joe Claussell. Finally there was a jam session with Tito Puente, George Benson, Roy Ayers, La India etc-incredible!!!!!!!!!!
Gilles Peterson's DJ gig at Cielo in March-this night proved why he is "The Don"-we were treated to a 5 hour set where he literally played every style of dance music possible from broken beat to Brazilian to brum and bass, soul, latin , house. What was incredible was the way he was able to hold the floor for that long while he seamlessly took you on the music journey-can't wait for him to come back.
