THE COSMIC LOUNGE featuring KING BRITT
A BUBBLE BATH OF ECLECTIC FLAVORS
DOORS OPEN @ 9pm-2am
sonotheque proudly presents a new monthly
residency featuring Philly’s own King Britt. Britt’s
immense talents and vision as a musician, producer
and DJ have gone far beyond the limited standards
of current dance music. By breaking apart genres
King has escaped the boundaries of working within
a single format. His creations, through deep house,
hip-hop, broken beat, nu-jazz, funk and afro-tech
have pioneered a movement toward a rhythmically
engaging sound routed in soulful textures and
provocative melodies.
Beginning his tenure in 1992 as a DJ/wax poet for
the Grammy award winning Digable Planets, King
together with Ishmael “Butterfly Butler, Doodlebug
and Ladybug changed the direction of hip-hop with
their scat-style jazz and lyrical witticisms. It was
during his time touring the globe that King developed
his love for dance music culture, crafting timeless
sets that incorporated his gifted knowledge of music
of the past and present.
By 1994 King created the ensemble Sylk 130, a
collective that many saw as a tribute to the funkafied
Philly sound of the ‘70s. This ever-evolving grouping
included the likes of Ursula Rucker, Alma Horton,
Alison Crockette, Yaz’s Alison Moyet, ABC’s Martin
Frye and stellar musician Grover Washington Jr.
As a remix producer the list is a who’s who of
modern dance culture. King has funked and flipped
with Macy Gray, Tori Amos, Yoko Ono, Femi Kuti,
Masters At Work and Joe Claussell. His recent remix
of breakthrough artist Josh One’s “Contemplation
(5.1 Entertainment) was nominated for the
Dancestar Remix of the year award. He is also
involved in curating an LP of original material for the
Japanese label Handcut Records.
Recently collaborating with Nigerian born producer
Oba Funke, King released “Cosmo Afrique (Karma
Giraffe) an LP of original Afro-Tech material that
features the vocal stylings of Soul II Soul’s Wumni,
Zap Mama and Diva Blue. Returning to his love for
hip-hop King released a full-length album of original
tracks for the highly acclaimed BBE Beat Generation
Series.
Currently when not trotting the globe King can be
found at the office of FiveSixMedia his multi-media
studio and marketing corporation.
Peter Gaston of CDNOW has said of King Britt . . .
“Britt underpins a present-day savvy that
distinguishes this record (Sylk 130) for revisiting
rather than rehashing the ‘80s.
