For those who crave stimulation that's as uniquely visual as it is auditory, you can get your fix at Brass Lounge's weekly Saturday luau "The Basement." Started by husband-and-wife team Warrick and Takicha Roundtree of Untamed Entertainment Group, the party revolves around all things culture, from their partner Shannon Dorn's photography (which she describes as "fine art photography with an urban twist") to body-painting by resident artists Dray and Orlando and two Top 40-eschewing jocks from two different L.A.-based crews, Beathackerz Collective and Critical Beatdown, Frank(e) and Ron Lee, respectively.
Built on the philosophy "ambience is everything," according to Warrick, "The Basement" exists as a throwback to East Coast-style basement or house parties, where live (in both senses of the term) music is as crucial as live (again the double meaning) art. The result: a fresh perspective on the old. The goal, as Dorn puts it: to be the "number one soul venue in Las Vegas."
A tall order? Yes, but doable in a city with few underground elements (think "The Get Back" at Beauty Bar, "Vinyl Wednesdays" at Tao or "Superslide Sundays" at Tabu). To that end, Warrick says they're launching a concert series on the first Saturday of the new year, an instrumental addition to a vinyl soundtrack that already encompasses everything from KRS-One and Big Daddy Kane, to Outkast and "high-energy dancehall."
Also, come early next year, the Roundtrees' spoken-word poetry event "Untamed Tongues" (which, like "Konkrete Jungle," used to be at Icehouse) will be coming back as a monthly at Brass Lounge. And, finally, Warrick says there's a reggae element that'll be hitched onto "The Basement" coming down the pike.
Reggae in Vegas clubland? Now that's different.
