DJ CASTING CALL: Here. This. Now.
We’re eagerly searching for a DJ to star in “Here. This. Now.,” a production for the New York International Fringe Festival at the Linhart Theatre this August.
Directed by Tamilla Woodard, “Here. This. Now.” is a 1-hour show based on true stories by teens about growing up in NYC, originally published by Youth Communication.
The DJ will work with a cast of three professional actors who will morph into several roles (Think Danny Hoch’s “Jails, Hospitals & Hip Hop” and Sarah Jones’ “Bridge & Tunnel.”) and get the audience hyped before the show begins. During the show, the DJ will be on stage, displaying his/her soundscape for the stories.
Who we’re looking for:
- DJ w/ability to switch up between hip hop, house and old school, spanning 25 years.
- Have experience spinning out in public.
- Appearance of 17-24 yr-old: this is a production about urban youth. Yes, even the adult actors look young.
- Stage presence, charisma: show your pretty face while you drop science.
- Professional attitude (muito importante).
- Must commit to rehearsal between 7/26-7/30, 8/5-8/6. And FIVE performances: 8/12, 8/13, 8/14, 8/16, 8/18.
DJ Moni rocked our world premiere at our 25th in January but couldn’t join us this time b/c of schedule conflict. You can view video snippets of the show (formerly known as “They Called Me ‘Crack Baby’”) at the links below.
DJ will receive monetary compensation TBA (actor rate).
If you’re qualified, please contact me or Tamilla Woodard at Tam@tamilla.com immediately…rehearsals start now.
Please read a description of the show below. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Loretta Chan

-------
"Here. This. Now." is a showcase of true stories by New York City teens, performed by three actors and a DJ.
You’ll travel from the Boogie Down Bronx to Money Makin’ Manhattan, through neighborhoods as diverse as Harlem, Flushing and Jamaica.
Rejoice in a young woman’s response to the hisses of the brotha on the corner with “empty pockets on the right and emptier pockets on the left.” Encounter a young man at the height of anxiety and infatuation over his secret crush (on another boy). Witness the complexities of living in foster care as told from within “the system.” Plus other tales of growing up in NYC, set against a soundscape of hip hop, house and old school.
Adapted for the stage, these finely crafted stories were originally published by Youth Communication, an award-winning narrative journalism program based in New York City, founded in 1980.
“Here. This. Now.” gets to the realness of urban teenagers who are often sold to but rarely heard; echoed in the movies and TV but often absent in the theatre. This is the unflinching voice of here and now. You’ll reminisce in familiar situations and see a reflection of yourself in these authentic stories that come from the heart. We guarantee you'll leave the theatre feeling inspired.
We sold out Symphony Space (over 800 seats) in January 2006 with a world premiere to celebrate Youth Communication's 25th anniversary. We knew it was time to share this revised production with new audiences.
