I've actually been a bit torn about the whole Kanye West fundraiser thing. While I agree with Supabizzee that it wasn't the time or the place for Kanye's comments, the other side of me is saying what 50 year old white woman in the midwest would be TiVo'ing Kanye's appearance on Charlie Rose to hear him say similar comments? He definitely reached a much broader audience by voicing his opinion on a live fundraiser like this, so kudos to him for doing what he felt was right. I'm all for people speaking their minds and especially questioning authority when they've so blatantly dropped the ball. Question his motives, sure, but it's really a tough call any way you look at it. I just want to see him take it a step further and stop wearing diamonds that come via the ongoing slave trade, etc. Don't 1/2 azz it if you're going to be down for the people.
This whole Katrina situation has definitely ignited the country though. Bush supporters are scratching their heads and there's the rumblings of revolution stirring coast to coast. It's a shame that it's taken some people 5+ years to get moved into saying "time out, something's not right here", but sometimes that's what it takes.

I can understand it could be seen as being the wrong place to say something like that...but i still support it simply because it forces people to act. If everyone had stuck to the script, the world could have turned off its TV that night and forgot everything they just heard. BUT thanks to Mr.West, that show probably left people feeling a little uneasy, maybe questioning themselves, or better yet questioning their government. And in my experience thats never a bad thing. While i agree that it was well-timed with his album release, i dont doubt that he would have said it, album or not. And anyway, what would a more appropriate forum be? A communtiy access show where Kanye can ramble for three hours to all 6 people watching. There are always better places to say things, but sometimes theres no time like the present and i think Kanye West has thrown a spanner (albeit a small one) into the US Governments propoganda machine that would have stormed on relentlessly had someone not have said...Hey!!!

I said the same thing - it may have been the right thing to say but the wrong place to say it.

i have to agree with sandi. this was a fundraiser for the red cross. i wish kanye could of expressed his views in a more appropriate forum.

Also I wanted to add hypothetically (sp) since it was a fundraising event and some 50 year old lady from the Mid-West (or elsewhere) was watching the program and wanted to write a check but hears that statement not only she would've been turned off by his comments but she may not have contributed.
I think what he had to say was heartfelt but it was just inappropriate to say it at a fundraising event. He should had voiced his concerns on a program such as Charlie Rose show (which he was on recentlyprior to the diaster) or Meet the Press. That's all.
