Francois: There's a documentary about NY club culture (of which the name escapes me, maybe someone could help), in which they talk to Danny T., Junior, Jellybean, etc. There's a whole piece about Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage days. They show a clip of him playing in Japan at one of his last shows. You're standing right behind him in the booth, and the crowd is going bonkers to the most hype disco jam i've ever heard. I has a very notable horn line. I'd love to know what it is.
Francois K...I've had the pleasure of hearing/watching you play on a number of occassions in NYC. Everytime-it's like magic. It's pure seduction,...whether your on the set or on percussion, you are amazing! Love to watch you play!! <3 me
Hey chloe doey, it is trent whats up
hey the next time you come to new york this summer hopefully we should check out francois K at this monday night party that he does, more dubby though
Hey- will you be spinning at Warm Up, PS1 again this year? I caught your set (for the first time admittedly...) and really enjoyed it.
Cheers!
Question for Francois: your arrival in NYC as a drummer is now famous. what about other percussion like conga? or is your drumming now about drum sequencing and programming for your productions? what do you consider to be the 'best' undiscovered percussion music around these days?
Dan
Francois i'm coming to deep space in february, but after seeing you at Sankeys Soap and at the now legendary after club house party following The Electric Chair all those years ago what should i expect to experience???
HI FRANCOIS....FIRST OF ALL I HAVE TO ADMIT MY SURPRISE LISTENING TO YOUR PERFORMANCE AT SONAR 2004 IN BARCELONA...I HAVEN'T BEEN AT YR PERFORMANCES FOR 3 YEARS SINCE THE TIMES I WORKED IN FLORENCE FOR NOBODY'S PERFECT...SUPRISE FOR THE ROOTS OF DUB MUSIC IN YR SOUNDS.... I REALLY WANT TO GIVE YOU ALL MY RESPECT TO YR WAY OF MAKING MUSIC...ABSOLUTELY THE BEST ACT OF ALL THE SONAR EVENT....OF COURSE !!! THE QUESTION: WHY, AFTER DRUM & BASS, THAT NOW IS A MARKET NICHE, NO NEW PROMINENT SOUND IN THE SURVEY OF WORLD DANCE MUSIC? THANKS AND REGARDS!
Francois I read somewhere that you were originally a drummer, how did that discipline help you in the world of dance music if at all.
We are starting out the first "Burning Questions" promo of the year with a dance music legend - Mr. François K. After moving to the US in 1975 from his native France, François K. became a huge player in the seminal NY disco label Prelude, remixing and signing some of the genres biggest hits. In the 80s he remixed and produced songs for Diana Ross, Ashford & Simpson, Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode, then formed Axis Studios in the 80s. Fast forward to the late 90s when François K. joined forces with DJs Danny Krivit and Joe Claussell to form the now-legendary Sunday party Body & Soul at NYC club Vinyl while also starting Wave Music, his very own label. More recently he has started Deep Space, his own party that explored all forms of dub inspired music .
Asking François K your burning question is easy as 1-2-3: Simply reply to this post and pose a question you want François to answer. We will then randomly pick 5 questions from the bunch and direct them to him. The final questions and answers will be posted under the Lifestyle section of our site at a later date. If you would like to read previous burning questions that were asked to Martin Luther, Gilles Peterson or Rahsaan Patterson go to the Lifestyle section of this site.
