I agree. It would be nice to see Kanye retroactively take care of Shirley out of respect. It's entirely possible that he didn't know she was that unaware of what is going on with her past recordings, but maybe I'm giving him too much credit.

Shameful, indeed. Unfortunately, it all boils down to who owns the publishing rights. It doesn't matter who provides the vocals. If they have no rights.....they have no rights.

But it would be nice if hip hop artist would just do the right thing, instead of only what is legally binding.

For real and it's really a shame if some old record label exec who owns her publishing just signed off on it and collects a check. It's as sad as all of the original hip hop artists who built the culture from the ground up getting nothing but footnotes in some hip hop text books.

I don't know why rappers don't check that stuff out first before putting themselves in that position.

She deserves to get paid.

Bassey Fumes Over Kanye Sample

Legendary diva dame Shirley Bassey is furious after discovering rapper Kanye West sampled her 1971 hit "Diamonds Are Forever" in his single "Diamonds From Sierra Leone."

The 68-year-old star is considering legal action after West used the chorus from the James Bond soundtrack song and alleges his record label Roc-A-Fella never approached her, reports British newspaper the Daily Mail.

Bassey says, "I didn't know anything about the song before its release.

"He didn't ask my permission to have me singing on the his song. I didn't even know it existed until I heard him performing at the Live 8 concert. I didn't even hear from his record company, which wasn't very nice.

"(Legally) it's something I want to look into, because he was very cheeky, so one way or another he is going to have to pay me a lot of money."
