I attended last night's Anthony Hamilton performance at the Canal Room and was incredibly disappointed by the lack of organization displayed by Giant Step and the lack of consideration afforded the attendees. I am a HUGE AH fan and was really looking forward to this show. However, because the Wednesday night show started an hour and a half late (the advertised start time was 10 and the show started at 11:30 pm), I had to leave after only 4 or 5 songs. C.P. time or not, starting a show at 11:30 pm on a "school" night is a bit ridiculous. The first indication of bad things to come was when the fans were kept waiting outside in the FREEZING cold 15 minutes after the doors were supposed to open at 9 pm. My toes were literally hurting from the bitter cold weather (and I had on closed-toed shoes). Then there was the throng of "fancy" or "special" people with their expensive cars and fur coats who were escorted through the front door while the rest of us -who had been there long before - were kept waiting outside. Once inside, the crowd grew and grew to an uncomfortable, packed-in-like-sardines level to the point where getting to the bathroom became an ordeal. I think the facility had close to double the occupancy that would have made it comfortable and "intimate" for its paying customers. Then the annoying DJ kept telling the crowd to "loosen up" and "get a drink at the bar," increasing my desire to jump onstage and give him a piece of my mind. Though the music was a little too loud and it was hard to hear AH's beautiful voice well, I enjoyed the few songs I was able to stay for. Overall, however, it was not worth my $36. As an elementary school teacher, I have to be at work at 8:30 am to help shape the young minds of America. I think it's incredibly rude to assume that people don't have important jobs to wake up for early in the morning. I am not an entertainment industry employee and can't stroll in to work at 10, 11 or 12 o'clock. I am still an AH fan but I feel highly insulted by the lack of courtesy shown to me and other dedicated fans. I certainly don't plan on attending another show promoted/produced by Giant Step. I believe some kind of apology is due to the hardcore fans like myself who were inconvenienced and more than a bit disrespected. Hopefully AH will keep in mind who helped get him to where he is now (the FANS!!) and perform with a more reputable, professional company in the future.
