I just wanted to post on Bebel Gilberto’s performance in NYC May 22 and May 23. I was at the May 23 performance and it was very good.

She did many songs from all three albums. They had a predetermined set list and then 3 pre-determined options of the encore of which she chose two after the audience called out suggestions/guesses. They ended up being River Song first and then Tanto Tempo.

She opened with Momento, performed August Day Song and Simplesmente, Cade Voce, Tranquillo, Novos Yorkinos as well as many others.

Federico Auebele was the keyboardist and was her “MC” for the evening. The guy playing the saxophone, flute, and piccolo I think is very very talented. I cannot recall his name, but all the musicians were introduced after the second song I recall.

The opening group – a man and a woman were Spanish, though I am not sure where they were from. They were alright. The guy did the guitar, and the woman some percussion instruments, and they both sang on many of the songs as they stood on stage. They were a bit softer than Bebel is, and certainly not bossa nova- but I would say a more “rural” guitar based singing act. – I get the vision of an old, wrinkled man with a cigar playing his guitar under the awning of the local bar on the dusty sunlit main street through town—that kind of music if you get my jist. But we all were anxious to see Bebel come out ---at 9.45pm, after an 8.30 to 9.30pm opening act.

Apparently she is a full-time resident of NYC so this was her “home” crowd. She had broken her ankle earlier in the week it seems, but it had mostly recovered—thanks to her physiotherapist whom she thanked---by the May 23 performance.

Ticket had been sold out (after the advertisement on giantstep.net) and it was packed house. I had wished that maybe another venue could have been chosen – like the Hiro Ballroom which is know to have Japanese/Brazilian artists, but that would not have held as many people as the Gramercy Threate, whose sound system is not as great as some other NYC venues. Thus I felt the true colors of Bebel and her instrumental group was not realized to the full potential.

Overall it was an enjoyable evening. Bebel has a great voice and the bossa music vibe just makes it all that much better.
