Dwele – ‘Some Kinda …’ CD Sampler (Virgin Records)

“Dwele, Dwele, Dwele has done it again!” The Detroit singer/songwriter delivers another solid performance with ‘Some Kinda…’. I had the privilege of reviewing the CD sampler and I haven’t stopped yearning for the full release since.

Dwele’s first commercial release, ‘Subject’ and prior underground self-produced CD, ‘Rize,’ propelled him from hook singer to first class soul artist and showcased a talent that is deserving of the many accolades it garnered. While some may argue that this is a complete repeat of what he has delivered in his past two albums (could that be so bad?), ‘Some Kinda…’ will not be a sophomore slump by any means. The sonic palate being produced by the likes of Mike City, J. Dilla, G-1 and Dwele himself, definitely builds on what ‘Subject’ started – smooth soul-dipped ballads that complement Dwele’s breathy vocals and bouncy soul-jazz numbers just hype enough to get you on the dance floor.

The sampler consists of one full cut and snippets of several others. The full track, “I Think I Love You” has Dwele doing what he does best, crooning about love and its many splendid feelings. This particular cut is one of those that will gradually beckon you to the floor in the early night and leave you open for more. Just like track 4, “Keep On,” with an infectious bass line that heats things up. “Weekend Love” slows the tempo up and accompanies us back down memory lane to that time we all have in common – bumping into an old love and understanding that the love might still be there.

The lack of the full CD notwithstanding, the “Some Kinda…” Sampler shapes up to be a powerful magnet drawing Dwele lovers and soul music lovers in general to their nearest music store. Don’t sleep! This CD is some kinda wonderful!
