Giant Step Records was founded in 1995 as a logical progression from the concert & club, management and marketing
divisions. Initially the label was set up as an imprint of Impulse Jazz, where Giant Step Records released Groove
Collective's sophomore effort 'We The People' and the groundbreaking Nuyorican Soul album. Produced by Masters At Work
and now considered a classic, the album featured Tito Puente, George Benson, Roy Ayers and Jazzy Jeff. The label moved
from Impulse Jazz to Epic Records and released Gilles Peterson's 'The Incredible Sounds of Gilles Peterson' album.
During this period Giant Step co-founder Maurice Bernstein went to Atlanta to follow up on a demo from a young
India.Arie and another singer called Donnie. Unable to persuade the powers at Epic to let him sign India and Donnie,
Bernstein started working on demos with Donnie, which later became 'The Colored Section.'
During the later part of the Epic period Giant Step started releasing a slew of independent 12" vinyl releases - many
collaborations with Giant Step Weekly resident Ron Trent including 12"s by Carl Hancock Rux, Jody Watley, Seek, Jiva
and other releases by Nickodemus & Osiris. In 2001, Giant Step became fully independent. Then came the highly
successful 'Soul Sessions' compilation series and a remix 12" series with Luaka Bop with releases by Shuggie Otis, Los
Amigos Invisibles and Si*Se.
During this period Bernstein continued to work on Donnie's full length 'The Colored Section.' Released in late 2002,
the album gained national and international acclaim while the single "Cloud 9" picked up radio play. Major labels
started calling and in May 2003 Giant Step inked a joint venture with Motown/Universal to re-release Donnie's debut and
subsequent CDs.
Giant Step Record is also a partner in the Turntables On The Hudson record label, another collective born out of a
highly successful NY underground party and distributes Bobbito a.k.a. Cucumber Slice's Fruitmeat Records.
Lately, Giant Step Records has been putting out forward thinking music from exciting artists such as Sara Devine, RSL
and Zap Mama. Carl Hancock Rux's sophomore CD 'Apothecary Rx' was released in June to critical acclaim. Other releases
include a new compilation series called 'Simply Good Music' featuring Esthero, Roots Manuva, Zap Mama, Amp Fiddler and
many more.
