We Bay We Boogie: Rehes Gets Down With Elevator Fight + MP3

    May 5th, 2010

One remaining artist profile from Rehes’ SXSW adventure:

“This whole ’stand around and look bored’ thing happens way too much [at shows]” says Dominic Angelella, guitarist for Philadelphia based rock-the-eff-out-with-your-respective-genitals-out band, Elevator Fight. “There’s so much music available right now it really takes a lot for people to get stoked. And we want people to get stoked.”

The band’s been known to previously describe their music as “liquefied panda rage” and “like that night where you think everything is going to be really fun, but you take that one extra drink and everything goes horribly wrong.” Damn, son – like that?  Yeah, like that.  They get the frick down.

Tia Fuller Releases Decisive Steps + MP3

    May 5th, 2010

Alto/soprano saxophonist/flautist Tia Fuller’s newest Mack Avenue release, Decisive Steps, is a sumptuous CD of ten tracks that illustrate her artistic fearlessness. A member of Beyoncé’s band for four years, Fuller’s agile, buoyant and elegant full-bodied sax lines effortlessly improvise a number of moods and grooves, as evidenced by the take-no-prisoners tempo of the title track. The album also contains her ingenious reworking of two well-worn standards: “I Can’t Get Started” and “My Shining Hour.”

Decisive Steps features Tia’s Beyoncé bandmate, drummer Kim Thompson; bassist Miriam Sullivan; Fuller’s sister, Shamie Royston on piano and Fender Rhodes; with special guests, trumpeter Sean Jones and bassist Christian McBride (both Mack Avenue label mates); vibraphonist Warren Wolf; and tap dancer Maurice Chestnut.

“Why Don’t You Love Me” Video by Beyoncé

    May 4th, 2010

Beyoncé takes it to higher levels in her video for “Why Don’t You Love Me” (which we sincerely doubt she has ever had to ask). [Update: This song was cowritten by singer and sister Solange].

Kings Go Forth: The Outsiders Are Back + MP3

    May 4th, 2010

Milwaukee-based soul band, co-founded by proprietor of the fabled Lotus Land record shop Andy Noble and longtime Milwaukee area R&B performer Black Wolf, Kings Go Forth drops its debut album, The Outsiders Are Back. Following a string of seven-inches lauded by soul music blogs and spun by the likes of DJ Shadow, the new album features artwork by Mingering Mike – the first time the celebrated artist has ever created art for a recording that actually exists – and a mix by Tom Moulton, the legendary producer and originator of the remix and 12-inch single format.

Written by Noble and Wolf, the full-length of nine original songs includes the Moulton mix of “Don’t Take My Shadow.” The album’s lone cover is an impossibly obscure soul lament written and recorded in a prison. In addition to Noble and Wolf, Kings Go Forth features Andy Noble on bass, Dave Wake on keyboards, guitarist Dan Flynn, percussionist Cecilio Negron, Jr., the explosive drummer Jeremy Kuzniar, trombonist Dave Cusma, trumpeter Jed Groser, vocalist Dan Fernandez, and rhythm guitarist and vocalist Matt Norberg.

Tamar-Kali Featuring Jean Grae: “Pearl Remix”

    May 4th, 2010

Tamar-Kali was dubbed as “A Punk Artist with a Soul” by NPR. On the other side, Okayplayer defines her more like a Soul artist with an edgy/Punk side. With an impressive front-woman history trailing behind her, Tamar-Kali is releasing her own unclassifiable full-length this summer, called Black Bottom. “Pearl” is the first single, and this remix features a verse by the incredible Jean Grae. (Thanks to OKP for the track).
