Uffie: Crunk & Grime

New Giant Step contributor Lily Kane ruminates on the worldwide pop star Uffie. Expect more from Lily in the future…

A new guilty pleasure in my life is Uffie, the American-born, Hong-Kong raised, cute-as-a-button electro chick. But the more I learn about her  (she’s been working with Steve Aoki and Ed Banger Records’ crew for a minute now), the less guilty I feel. Hell, I’m proud of it. I’d wear a hot neon Uffie T-shirt. Wanna fight about it?

The first time I heard Uffie, it was a while ago in some iPod DJ mix (I wanna say Girl Talk. Either that, or my cousin’s mix, it doesn’t matter.) The mix contained a bit of Uffie’s song “Hot Chick” with these fuck-off lyrics: ‘I’m like, hot chick that you can’t even touch / I’m like this cold-ass bitch and I ain’t ready to suck’. So obviously I loved this girl immediately. They’re questionable lyrics and I soon found out, as you will, that Uffie is just bursting with questionable lyrics. I would say this is a Level 1 on her personal Offensiveness Scale of 1-10. The lyrics, while always entertaining to me, are mostly idiotic, but the songs are perfect party anthems.

Georgia Anne Muldrow Remixes “Untitled/Fantastic” + MP3

We’ve known Gerogia Anne Muldrow and her aliases as a staple on the scene for a while, but she’s been even more prolific than usual lately. Georgia is appearing as “Jyoti” in her forthcoming Jazz album, Ocotea, paying homage to the late, great Alice Coltrane who gifted her with this name. With encouragement from the sublime Alice Coltrane, an innovative musician in her own right, it’s no wonder that Georgia’s works have gained so much praise from the likes of Gilles Peterson and Erykah Badu.

From our friends at Mochilla:  “Remixing Suite for Ma Dukes is a brave undertaking.  Several producers and MCs at first accepted and then declined the job.  In the end we think we got the right person.  It is with great pleasure on the week of Mothers Day to release this remix.  Done while mothering by none other than Georgia Anne Muldrow.  This project began as an homage to one mother’s love (Ma Dukes) and has now been remixed by another (Georgia Anne Muldrow) with her son Nokware in her lap.  Two incredible women, one amazing track.  Remixed.

Georgia who has done production for Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and partner Dudley Perkins was an amazing person to watch at work.  Her feel is so hers.  She seemed so comfortable with the music.  She insisted that she didn’t want to chop the song but to play along as if she was there in the Orchestra.  We wanted her to sing on the track too but her microphone was in the shop for repairs – so on suggestion she sang the vocals into the lavaller tie clip mic that we used to capture sound for the video.

This remix and the two other remixes from Te’Amir (remixing Mulatu Astatke) and Jneiro Jarel (remixing Arthur Verocai) will be available on a Timeless Remixed EP this summer.”

We Bay We Boogie: Rehes Gets Down With Elevator Fight + MP3

One remaining artist profile from Rehes’ SXSW adventure:

“This whole ‘stand around and look bored’ thing happens way too much [at shows]” says Dominic Angelella, guitarist for Philadelphia based rock-the-eff-out-with-your-respective-genitals-out band, Elevator Fight. “There’s so much music available right now it really takes a lot for people to get stoked. And we want people to get stoked.”

The band’s been known to previously describe their music as “liquefied panda rage” and “like that night where you think everything is going to be really fun, but you take that one extra drink and everything goes horribly wrong.” Damn, son – like that?  Yeah, like that.  They get the frick down.
