    GPWW 8/23/10: Uproot Andy Mix

    September 2nd, 2010

Gilles Peterson starts off this week with a tribute to legendary jazz singer Abbey Lincoln, who just passed away a few weeks ago. Gilles plays her track with Max Roach and the appropriately titled “Long As You’re Living.” Later he gets into other acts like Systema Solar, Oriol, Moonstarr, Leatherette, Finn Peters and of course, more music you’ve never heard before.

Gilles also has a special guest mix from Uproot Andy (pictured above) of Brooklyn, a resident DJ at the weekly ‘Que Bajo’ party at Santos Party House (NYC). His mix involves lots of globally-influenced remixes of Los Rakas, Amadou and Mariam, Chief Boimba and more.

Kirk Whalum’s Donny Hathaway Tribute Out Now: Everything is Everything

    September 1st, 2010

Donny Hathaway would have been 65 years old on October 1, 2010. Tenor saxophonist Kirk Whalum’s work has similarly crossed the boundaries between R&B, gospel and jazz with an emotional immediacy that is beyond compare. Kirk’s new release, Everything Is Everything: The Music of Donny Hathaway brilliantly exhibits 8-time Grammy nominee Kirk’s singular interpretive skills. Highlights include “You Had To Know,” featuring a heartfelt performance by Donny’s daughter, Lalah Hathaway, and Musiq Soulchild’s retro take on “We’re Still Friends.”

RSVP on Facebook to stream his live performance from the Detroit International Jazz Festival this Labor Day weekend, on September 4 at 9 PM (EST).
