DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem: Strange Games & Funky Things Vol 5

DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsytem present the 5th volume in the first legitimate and longest running rare groove mix tape series in the world.  Strange Games & Funky Things Volume 5 is described by Gilles Peterson as the best ever rare groove compilation series of all time.

This series, which was conceived by BBE founder Peter Adarkwah in the summer of 1997, compiles the best of 70′s soul, 80′s rare groove, and 90′s mass market hip hop.  The fifth volume is mixed by one of the best of all beat masters, DJ Spinna.  It is a much more worldy mix than the other volumes, featuring a wide variety of artists from the multi-platinum selling War to Sugar Hill Records’ founder, Sylvia.  The compilation even includes world music underground icons like C.K. Mann and Francisco Aguabella.

The Electrolightz Remix Yvette Rovira + MP3

The Electrolightz are at it again, and now, with the help of newcomer Yvette Rovira.  The well-known pop-electro-hip-hop group have been on a popular remix streak with Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and “Bad Romance,” Mary J Blige’s “I Am”, La Roux’s “Bulletproof”, and now Yvette Rovira’s “Let’s Go Out Tonight”.  With a bit of the Electrolightz energy and spunk, the party anthem “Let’s Go Out Tonight” from her self-titled album Yvette Rovira becomes a real club banger to keep you out ’til the sun comes up.

Working with producer Rob Mounsey (Rihanna, Mary J. Blige), emerging artist Yvette Rovira has strong musical talents flavored with Latin-inspired percussion, funk and old-school R&B references, all sung with a distinctive power and passion.

GPWW 8/30/10: TOKiMONSTA Mix

GPWW this week features a mix by TOKiMONSTA, Los Angeles DJ and beatsmith who started out as an unfocused classical piano student. That piano training became her musical foundation as she grew to make layered productions with live and digital instrumentation, dusty old vinyl, and whatever else she could find. Signed to Flying Lotus‘ imprint, Brainfeeder, she’s fearless and energetic, having performed with Flying Lotus, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer, and many other of her fellow beat makers.

The first half of the radio show has some old favorites and new artists, including Esperanza Spalding, Crue-L, Fela Kuti, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jazztronik, Ana Tijoux and more.
