Brazil’s most influential musician and its Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, will be performing live at Nokia Theatre Times Square on Thursday, March 11. The String Concert will feature Jacques Morelenbaum and Bem Gil.

The Heavy Sound, a collective of artists, DJs and musicians, presents a night of music to raise awareness of diabetes this Wednesday, January 20th. Actor Michael Rapaport is hosting the event with Phife Dawg. As a diabetic, Phife recently received a long-awaited kidney transplant and this event will mark his first appearance in New York City since the surgery.
A fantastic line-up including Ghostface Killah, Jay Electronica, Consequence, Talib Kweli and more will perform at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. D-Lyfe is set to DJ for the evening – expect surprise appearances both onstage and in the DJ booth.
Various diabetic support organizations will be on-site and donations are highly encouraged.

In light of Haiti’s recent plight, Giant Step is contributing a portion of the proceeds from its 6th Annual MLK, Jr. Tribute at Cielo this Sunday, Jan. 17, to Doctors Without Borders – an organization dedicating emergency medical response to the country. Help spread the word about their efforts and keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts this weekend.
