Grillade – “Just A Sad Christmas”

Ever since Giant Step blogger Rehes introduced us to Grillade in their SXSW adventures, we’ve seen the group move on up in the blogosphere, their video “Dream Of You (Emotionally Yours)” just featured as video of the day on AOL.com, premiered on Okayplayer. Unearthed, adored and reinvented by Grillade, “Just A Sad Christmas” is the groupʼs first official release and is available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers now.

Neither holly nor jolly, the song is a cover, originally performed by Soul Duo and recorded for their second ever 7” single in 1969. Grillade vocalist Ragen Fykes: “‘Sad Christmas’ embodies the soul of Christmas now. It has meat, it has bite. It reflects on the vast majority that are shadowed by Jingle Bells. Not everybody is standing under the mistletoe this year, not everyone is having a Holly Jolly Christmas. Its The christmas song you would never hear, but should hear. It offers a musical release from Grillade, for those in need. Tis the season.”

Cilla K. Featuring Jneiro Jarel: “Evil Child”

Cilla K., the French West Indian vocalist and beatmaker released her first full-length album Fine Line in April 2010. This artist is on a mission to bring something intriguing to the table, with a concoction of indie and alternative beats, subtle jazz hints, hip hop and soul music sonorities. Coming to NYC from Guadeloupe, she collaborated with producer David Patillo and soon after releasing their song “Lost In You” online, Cilla K gained interest from more producers and established artists. The two have been working together since, and have brought on board such collaborators as Junius Bervine (Floetry, D’Angelo, Common), Clay Sears (Jill Scott, Vivian Green), Danny P. (Joss Stone, Robbie Williams), and Mr. Khaliyl (Da Bush Babees, Talib Kweli).

Besides the single “Easy To Love” (check the Official Music Video here), Fine Line also includes the powerful song featuring Jniero Jarel, “Evil Child” now on iTunes with original artwork by Muris Fixon.

Lefto & Simbad Present Worldwide Family Volume 1 Teasers

Brownswood Recordings is a clear leader in the art of compilation releases. Besides the fact that the music is often hand-picked by Gilles Peterson, Brownswood compilations have a greater purpose than to rehash old hits; they bring quality music to light, music that might otherwise be overlooked.

Gilles isn’t the only DJ on a world mission to find the perfect beat, and he’s trusted the Brownswood family DJs Lefto & Simbad to start a new series for the Worldwide Family. Enjoy these teasers from both DJs and check the tracklistings after the jump.

Look out for Lefto & Simbad Present Worldwide Family Volume 1 in early 2011.
