Jessie J Video: “Price Tag ft. B.o.B.”

    January 31st, 2011

By now you may have noticed that we are Jessie J fans. We love the outrageous “Do It Like a Dude” video and we love her “Boombox Series” video even more. We see her continuously on the rise and here is another sign: her single “Price Tag” has a verse from B.o.B. and a new relatively friendly music video.

Jessie J’s full-length Who You Are will be released in the US this Spring on Universal/Republic.

Jazmine Sullivan Single “Take Over You” + MP3

    January 31st, 2011

Jazmine Sullivan is often recognizable by her love fueled temper-tantrum lyrics: throwing bricks through windows, giving her man a 10 second countdown to run for his life, or just loudly expressing some ‘You-did-me-wrong’ anger. So we’re thrilled to see this other side of Jazmine, the loving side, who’s gonna remind her man exactly why he puts up with her moods. [via Okayplayer via SoulBounce]

Adele Covers “Promise This” by Cheryl Cole, Upcoming Album 21 Receives Critical Acclaim

    January 28th, 2011

Adele absolutely kills this cover of Cheryl Cole’s “Promise This” for BBC’s Live Lounge. Originally an upbeat dance song, Adele tones it down to show off her pipes, as she should. Lucky for us, it’s also a technique we hear in her upcoming album, 21.

Adele – Promise This (Cheryl Cole Cover) by CherylOnline

While the new album by Adele has not officially arrived in the US yet, the Euro scene and the savvy, impatient blogosphere is already eating it up. Some press highlights include:

“With just a piano as backing there are no layers to pull back or hidden meanings to uncover and its simplicity will leave you feeling the full effects of her beautiful make-your-hair-stand-on-end vocals. It’s an early shout, but it could very well be the album of 2011.” – Punchbowl Blog

“This is a serious and frequently astonishing album.” -Holy Moly

“Her second offering has lived up to the reputation she has created from her debut and powerful voice which is the female Johnny Cash.” – M is for Music

21 is simply stunning. … Genuinely brilliant.” – BBC

21 will be released in the US on February 22nd on Columbia Records.

    Blaqstarr Video: “Rider Girl”

    January 27th, 2011

Check out Blaqstarr’s new video for “Rider Girl” from the Divine EP. As if the music isn’t catchy enough, Blaqstarr also seems determined to stick in our heads visually, with his glistening muscles and fauxhawk. The motorcycle-riding girl of the song is present but only as a psychedelic silhouette, constantly in motion.

Don’t forget Blaqstarr’s Divine EP is out this week [iTunes]. He is performing a special showcase at Qué Bajo?! at Santos Party House, NYC on Thursday, 1/27 at 10 pm and an additional live show at MeanRed’s Dark Disco at Good Units, NYC on Saturday, 1/29.

New Releases This Week: Charles Bradley & Tony Cook

    January 26th, 2011

Charles Bradley has a new release out this week on Dunham Records, a sub-label of Daptone Records, the great Brooklyn-based home of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Dunham is the perfect fit for the re-discovered soul singer, whose 45 singles were relatively unappreciated in their time. After years of traveling and odd jobs, he was picked up by Daptone’s Gabriel Roth, and now he’s touring around the country with The Budos Band & The Menahan Street Band. His new album, No Time For Dreaming, is available in stores today. Get a free download below, and check out the video for “The World (Is Going Up In Flames)” here.

Tony Cook is another comeback story with a new release out this week: Back To Reality. Tony was the drummer of the J.B.’s, and he produced the record “On The Floor (Rock It)” which later became known as “granddaddy of house records.” While funk gradually turned into disco, Cook began to produce on his own, merging genres that didn’t exist yet like garage and house (hence “the granddaddy of house records” title). Stones Throw Records is releasing some of these old recordings on Back to Reality, showing the music community’s cooperation between generations and genre labels. Download the single below, get the album on iTunes, and get more info about Tony Cook from Stones Throw.
