Captain Planet to Release ‘Cookin’ Gumbo’ + MP3

We already know y’all loved Captain Planet’s Ningané EP – we did, too. But the diverse beatsmith might have outdone himself with his first full length, Cookin’ Gumbo. Out on September 6th, the album combines funk, soul, and world music from “all corners of the globe” to bring an irresistible concoction of dancefloor tunes. It is in fact difficult to stay in our seats while writing this – we may well have to end this post prematurely and attend to our urge to move.

Moving along swiftly. Do take a listen to the free MP3 remixing the amazing Mia Doi Todd’s “Paraty.” We enjoyed thoroughly!

And lastly, do not miss out on the sure to be incredible release parties in LA, SF, NY, and DC. Details below!

Photo Recap: Gilles Peterson at Cielo, NYC

Last night at Cielo was a total blast, to say the least. The mood was right, running into familiar faces was the standard, and seeing some new gorgeous ones didn’t seem to be a challenge either. Gilles Peterson ripped his set with a tasty melange of world tunes, mixes, chops, and mash-up’s that kept the crowd both dancing and in awe all night.

One Giant Step staffer may have shed a tear when he played Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun’s “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai,” a classic Bollywood hit, which you may enjoy below. Afterwards, he let us know he was ‘taking us Brazil’ like it was nothing. It probably really wasn’t.

Yes, you probably should kick yourself if you missed last night.

Next Step August Winner: Iman Williams

Congratulations to Iman Williams for being this month’s Next Step winner!

The Alabama bred and Atlanta based neo-soul songstress Iman Williams is in fact known to many as a visual artist. That said, she’s managed to keep a healthy balance between her two passions and develop both.

Her vocal style/mood might be reminiscent of Seattle based Choklate to some. But Iman’s music is spacier and more experimental than Choklate’s, which then reminds us of Erykah Badu’s approach to her music – a quirky playtime in the musical sandbox. And yet still, Iman remains a brand of her own and we are so excited to get to share this gem of an artist with you.

Late last year, Iman release an album entitled Stupid Human Trick on Bandcamp. Within the last several months, she’s also released a handful of remixes for free download (check out her Soundcloud). There’s sure plenty of material to keep us busy for a while, but we won’t lie – we are super excited to see how Iman evolves next. And no fear, she tells us another project called Cotton will soon be underway and release sometime in 2012!

Below, we have two exclusive free downloads for the Giant Step community: “Float Away” and “Before.” After that, find a full stream of Iman’s most recent album, Stupid Human Trick, and be sure you don’t miss our favorite tracks – “All This Time (Down and Out)” and “Ordinary Love.”
