Courtesy of Nappy G, we have a very rare 1993 live recording of Groove Collective at their Friday residency at the legendary club Sybarite in Soho, which we started to give the group a platform to play as a band. In fact, Groove Collective were born out of Giant Step’s weekly Thursday party in the early 1990′s where they would jam with DJs Smash and Jazzy Nice.

Above, also find a bonus tune by Groove Collective, 1994′s “Whatchugot.”

After the jump, find Nappy G’s comments about the recording as well as the full list of band members!

Nappy G shares about the recording:

I have personally had some deep & emotional flashback/forward moments while listening to this recently. I hope you do,too! :-) I think it’s a lost gem,& with all its rough edges, it somehow is still amazing. These young men were on to something! :-)

This is from an audience-recorded cassette tape that has been digitized and had some noise reduction & normalization applied (via Waves’ X-Noise & UltraMaximizer software). Recording source unknown, but this copy was passed to me by Sanjiv Desai. I tweaked the sound & digitized it.

Thanks, Sanjiv! Captured some gold here…. Brings back memories! We were/are great! Now get ready to go back….wayyyy back….back into time….to the land of…Troglodytes…& David Dinkins (sigh)…the good ol’ Nasty sloppy days… ~Enjoy~

p.s. Side 2 ends at the beginning of a sick-ass bass solo….so sad! But we can dream & remember…
