Giant Step Vault: Giant Step at the Supper Club, NYC – MTV Piece from 1994

    December 28th, 2011

We had to dig very deep to find this one. It is from a documentary on MTV called “24 hours in music.” Giant Step was chosen as the late night club. It captures Giant Step at the height of it’s period at Supper Club in NY and it features a rare footage of a Repercussions performance, DJ Smash and an interview with Giant Step CEO Maurice Bernstein.

Giant Step Staff Picks of 2011

    December 27th, 2011

Here at last are our staff picks of the year. Undeniably the most varied list we’ve had so far, some of the artists we’ll remember 2011 for include: Raphael, Saadiq, James Blake, Adele, Michael Kiwanuka, The Weeknd, and SBTRKT. Chocked full of each our personal tastes and quirks, it’s best to eschew any further generalizations. We suggest you dive head long into our favorite albums, singles, movies and more.

    See the full list here.

Giant Step Vault: Basement Jaxx Live at SummerStage – Miles Ahead Series from 2001

    December 26th, 2011

Here is a blast from the past. In the summer of 2001 we brought Basement Jaxx to Central Park Summerstage as part of our Miles Ahead music series. They put on a serious show that day with Brazilian carnival dancers and the park was rocking! A few weeks after the show NY was attacked and the World Trade Center destroyed. For us, this event captures that pre-9/11 innocence of the city.

Giant Step Vault: Nuyorican Soul Record Release Party at Supper Club, NYC 1997

    December 23rd, 2011

More from the vault! Now this really is a rare gem and we’re not sure if it’s ever been seen before. This is the footage from the famous launch party at Supper Club NY for the release of Nuyorican Soul’s album. It features behind the scenes interviews plus footage of the jam session with George Benson, Tito Puente, Vince Montana and Roy Ayers. This was one of our favorite parties of all time! We even found the old flyer.

New Release: Blu & Exile – ‘Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them’

    December 21st, 2011

Uh, what? It was only a month or two we were talking to some pals who were saying we were tough out of luck if we were to expect this duo to ever release a project together again. Not to take all the credit or whatever, but we think we had something to do with this.

Los Angeles contingent Blu & Exile are back, y’all. Curse word. Exile continues to habitually pour out his dreamy chopped beats while Blu makes his easy buttery rhymes wrap around you like a cinnamon roll. What?

Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them. Just listen and get this ish now, please.

Giant Step Vault: Nuyorican Soul EPK – Giant Step Records 1997

    December 21st, 2011

We dug deep into the Giant Step vault to find some gems from the past. Here is the first of the bunch, an EPK for the release of Nuyorican Soul on Giant Step Records. Back then it was common to compile an electronic press kit (EPK) to send out a pre-release – this would help with journalists, retail and radio. Although it was more of an industry tool, we thought you might enjoy seeing it. A lot of the footage and interviews are from the actual photo shoot for the album artwork. The video features interviews with Kenny Dope and Little Louie Vega, Roy Ayers, George Benson, La India, Jocelyn Brown and Tito Puente to name a few.

Keep an eye on this site over the holiday break for more videos from the Giant Step vault.
