New Release: Cecilia Stalin – ‘Step Like A Giant’

    January 31st, 2012

Now this is something truly special. Also taking inspiration from our namesake, John Coltrane’s Giant Steps album, Swedish vocalist Cecilia Stalin has released her Step Like A Giant project.

She has done an overwhelmingly beautiful job paying homage to one of our most cherished musical greats. She speaks on the project:

This project was born deep down in my heart when I first heard “Naima” by John Coltrane. I fell deeply in love with the melody and then even more with the lyrics after learning more about him. I have ever since spiritually been working with the music of John Coltrane and it’s now come out in new shapes, forms and ideas.

Cecilia aims to use the project to introduce Coltrane’s music to those who may not yet be familiar. Stream the project below and become inspired yourself!

Lana Del Rey Releases ‘Born To Die’

    January 31st, 2012

It wasn’t too long ago that we were all put into a spell with Lana Del Rey’s title track video. With Born To Die out today, there’s now a bunch more where that came from.

The self-proclaimed ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ defines her genre as ‘Hollywood pop/sadcore.’ No doubt that Lana makes us feel a little emo with a side of gully – preview a few of the tracks below and try to stop that g-meter from rising.

New Track: Frank Ocean – “Voodoo” [Snippet]

    January 30th, 2012

Frank Ocean took to his Tumblr again to leave us with yet another mysterious set of sounds. This particular treat is called “Voodoo,” and has a relatively slowed down, relaxed vibe. Clocking in at 1:38, it’s difficult to exactly where this track while show up, if anywhere. Alas, a very repeatable one minute and thirty eight seconds it is – we’ll take it.

New Track: Zaki Ibrahim – “Something In The Water”

    January 30th, 2012

Love this lady. Zaki Ibrahim’s music instantly left its mark on us back when we heard her Iqra In Orange debut, which is criminally slept on. “Something In The Water” is a dubbed out soulful house tune laced with Zaki’s mesmeric vocals.

Word is that the next album, Every Opposite, is in the works, too! Giddy can’t begin to describe how we feel.

Video: Iman Omari – “Worth It”

    January 27th, 2012

Los Angeles bred Iman Omari is about to give some of these singer boys a run for their money. The uber stripped down, beautifully colored, and ultra sexy smoky video for “Worth It” reminds us of one of our favorites in recent time, Frank Ocean.

In case you are already itching for another fix (which you are), head over to Iman’s page for a free download of his recent Energy project.

Thank you much to our gal Christine Mehr for putting us on to this one!

Video: Estelle – “Thank You” + Tour Dates

    January 27th, 2012

“Thank you, cos now I know what I don’t want,” reads the opening frame of Estelle’s new “Thank You” video. Real ish. By now, pretty much everyone has to know and love this hypnotizing tune with its dipping sitar and unearthly feel. The video is equally both dreamy and sobering with its desaturated visuals, dipping into shadows and evocative framing.

The upcoming album, All of Me, will be available on February 28th.
