This is a pretty damn awesome interview with Cut Chemist, detailing the history behind his collection of 35,000+ records. Many of his records live in a converted horse stable in LA, where about 15,000 of the collection resides (many others are at his mama’s house, whom he apologizes to). His filing system is bananas and insanely impressive – the man is about his business.

The Chemist shares about his musical baby sitter and how his mother escorted him along his first record digging trip. And how it was like, so way uncool to have moms helping you dig, man.

Folks can also hear the story of “The Big Dig,” which was a Brazilian crate digging trip made by Cut Chemist, Madlib, Egon and Babu (Beat Junkies) and J. Rocc.

“We turned that country upside down. We changed the whole infrastructure of their economy just based on how many of us there were. It was like they brought in the army. Here comes the American DJs. It may have been the most amount of records I bought in one trip.”

Some really great moments in hip hop history all throughout this piece. Love love love it!

New Release: ‘Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia’

10 years of legal debacles later comes the release of Nobody Can Live Forever: The Existential Soul of Tim Maia. The compilation is part of Luaka Bop’s World Psychedelic Classics series and is out on October 2, and introduced the Brazilian legend to the US audience.

If it weren’t for his onstage heart attack in 1998, Tim Maia would be ringing in his 70th birthday on September 28 (tomorrow). In celebration of Maia’s upcoming birthday, Luaka Bop is hosting worldwide birthday festivities including tribute shows, DJ sets and live performances. Folks can find the skinny on these events on Tim’s Facebook page.

On the new release, you’ll find recordings spanning the 1970s, which include the songs he wrote for his spiritual cult of sorts called Energia Racional. Enjoy the full stream of some glittery and groovy Brazilian psychadelia.

Video: Jaden – “The Coolest” (beat by The Stuyvesants)

We knew something sounded familiar here. Glad our homies The Stuyvesants got credit where due on this track that was initially ganked. For those unfamiliar, the awesome instrumental is called “Stoops, Park, & Rooftops.”

Will Smith’s young man Jaden is following in his father’s rappity rap steps with his new single called “The Coolest.” Got kind of a Wiz Khalifa type flow going on, and he really is pretty damn adorable.
