New Release: Jose James – ‘No Beginning No End’

The day is finally here for the new Jose James album, No Beginning No End. The work introduces Jose to a more universal audience through his graceful and astute plays with varied styles and genres on the album. He weaves together a sound that is so much more than just jazz and like Robert Glasper did with Black Radio, creates a bridge to help build a new musical frontier.

The star collaborators on the album help it sparkle and shine only more. Producer/bassist Pino Palladino, Glasper, Emily King, Hindi Zahra, and Kris Bowers are just a few of the talents that have helped transcend this project to its highest heights. In case you missed the NPR stream, definitely do kick off your shoes and take a little afternoon break for a listen – you won’t be disappointed.

New Yorkers! Tomorrow is going to be an unforgettable, magical night at the Highline Ballroom as Jose kicks off his US tour with an album release show. Find more details on our event page.

Video: Chester Watson – “Phantom”

Um. We love this kid. Thanks to Fresh Selects for putting us on to the mysterious youngin’ that is Chester Watson. The low key chiming beat provides a perfect landscape for Chester’s effortless flow, which seems to just blend into itself, massaging into your brain over and over.

The song is from a mixtape called Phantom that Chester released at age 15.

Video: Jamie Lidell – “why_ya_why”

Been a while since we’ve heard from Jamie Lidell. In prep for his upcoming self-titled album, he’s released a couple tracks. The first track was “What A Shame,” a dense industrial sounding track you can find below. We, however, are partial to this new track he’s just dropped called “why_ya_why,” complete with quirky glowy animated visuals. While still somewhat dense and gritty with the production, this tune has got a more swingy soul vibe and reminds us a bit of Omar Lyefook at times – all good by us! Loving the attitude Jamie is bringing here.

Jamie Lidell will drop on February 19.

Video: Solange & Oliver xx – “Make It Hot” (Nicole Wray Cover)

On her recent tour stop in London at XOYO, Solange takes us way back and brings Oliver xx from the famed The xx along for the ride. 90s R&B had so many gems that certain ones somehow sadly seem to get lost, and such we thank Solange for her service in bringing Nicole Wray’s “Make It Hot” back into the forefront of our minds and hearts.

We’re gonna be dipping and weaving to the song all weekend now. Aye!
