Cassandra Wilson began her singing odyssey in the 1980's working with saxophonist Steve Coleman's M Base collective. As she has shown throughout her career, Wilson again demonstrates an uncanny ability to follow her muse in melding genres, ranging from the blues and roots music to pop and folk rather than conform to the expectations of jazz vocalism. In an interview almost a decade ago, Wilson stated, "I've never believed in the canonization of jazz. Jazz by definition is a music that always has to expand and evolve. There's a place for people to reinterpret the holy book of jazz standards, but there also has to be a place inside the music for those who are adventurous." Wilson has indeed made her music intimate and special while at the same exploring new horizons.
