Janita started her career at the early age of 13, becoming a celebrity in her home country of Finland. Before turning 17, Janita already had multiple hits, received two Finnish Grammy Awards, had appeared on numerous magazine covers, toured nationally and was a role model who was selected as the front person for a government anti-drug campaign. At the age of 15, Janita was voted "the most sensual woman in Finland" by the readers of one of the largest-circulated weekly magazines.
Janita had some wonderful experiences working with big names in the music world: Boyz II Men's Michael McCary, producer David Gamson (Meshell Ndegeocello, Chaka Khan), JayDee from Slum Village, and engineer Jimmy Douglass (Missy Elliott & Timbaland). She wasn't writing much of herown music at the start of her career, but was studying the whole process intently. Then Janita had an experience that changed her outlook on life and art; she was walking down a street in Manhattan and a piece of scaffolding fell from a construction site and hit her on her head and back. Miraculously, she was not badly injured but was very affected by the ordeal mentally. She realized how fragile life is and that whatever she wanted to do in life, she needed to start doing that now. Janita started writing poems and songs to be publicized, which is something she had been too shy to do in the past.
While pursuing a career in music in the States, Janita has been absorbing the energy of multi-cultural New York City. Through her experiences in life she has developed her own unique sound that combines the elements of the big city and her own past in Finland: The bright nights of midsummer, the wintry darkness, thousands of shimmering lakes and vast forests. Her music is sensual, soulful and eclectic and is often compared to Sade, Seal, Bebel Gilberto, India.Arie and Jill Scott. Her top-notch live band consists of musicians from the recordings and performances of India.Arie, Maxwell, Steely Dan, Angie Stone, D'Angelo, Me'shell Ndege'Ocello, Dianne Reeves and many others.
