Waxploitation Launches 4th Benefit Auction for Darfur

causes2_300Waxploitation has put together its fourth annual auction to benefit Human Rights Watch, Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam America. 100% of the proceeds go toward their work in Darfur and elsewhere.

This year’s selection includes signed recordings and artifacts from Madonna, Kid Rock, Norah Jones, Wilco, The Shins, Gnarls Barkley, Kylie Minogue, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Arctic Monkeys, Diplo, Counting Crows, Matisyahu, Stereophonics as well as non-music items signed by Salvador Dali, Luke Chueh, Jean-Luc Godard, Yogi Berra and Hugh Hefner to name a few.

Waxploitation recently released Causes 2, its second benefit album for Darfur. The album includes exclusive songs donated by The Decemberists, Devendra Banhart, Diplo, LCD Soundsystem, My Morning Jacket, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, and others.

“With everything else in the news, it’s important to not forget Darfur,” says Waxploitation founder Jeff Antebi. “When we did our first benefit auction, 70,000 people had already died. Today, the number is estimated to be 300,000.  Almost five million innocent civilians are caught in the middle of this, with nowhere to go.”

The auction launches today, July 27th at www.ebay.com/causesauction

Jay-Z Confirmed as Friday Night Headliner for All Points West Festival

jay-z-2The All Points West festival announced that Jay-Z has been added to the bill for Friday, July 31. As we recently learned, Beastie Boys were forced to cancel their headlining appearance at APW’s opening night –as well as all other engagements–when MCA was diagnosed with cancer. For those requesting refunds based on this news, ticket refunds are available at point of purchase for Friday single day tickets only. But if you’re asking for a refund, you might be insane. The news is bittersweet, our thoughts are with MCA and we’re all hoping for a speedy recovery. But this surprise replacement is not too shabby.

This show will mark the U.S. festival debut of Jay-Z, who last year performed at a variety of overseas festivals including the U.K.’s Glastonbury, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, Norway’s Hove Festival and the O2 Wireless Festival in London. In a review of a recent show, the Los Angeles Times‘ Ann Powers said, “Jay-Z shows are fun because the rapper is so adept at spinning liquid gold; his mouth is one of the most nimble in the genre’s history, and he uses it to present thoughts that are sharp, funny and resonant”.

Sad news from the Beastie Boys forces them to cancel tour dates (including All Points West) and to push their upcoming album release, Hot Sauce Committee. MCA has a form of cancer localized in the parotid gland, which is luckily treatable. To focus on the positive side, he assures us that his voice will not be affected by the treatment.
